One Hundred Years of Solitude by Gabriel García Márquez (Intermediate)

Hi everyone, today I'm going to talk about my favorite book for different reasons: One Hundred Years of Solitude by Gabriel García Márquez, a Colombian writer. This book belongs to the genre of magical realism, this is, the characters live different events in their lives that are characteristic of irrationality. The beginning of the story is marked by the exodus of a people and their interaction with the gypsies and their modern inventions in the magic city of Macondo. This story constantly relates the solitude and love as two complex aspects that bring misfortune to the Buendía family. This is the third time that I am reading the book because his characters have transcended the paper pages and have accompanied me in innumerable reflections: Aureliano Buendía and his depressing aura, Rebeca Buendía and his unbearable deliriums that throw her again and again to eat land, and above all, Ursula Iguarán, my favorite character, because her reflects stability, positive ideas and determined fight to continue with her life and the life of her family.

In my opinion, this book is a metaphor for the history of Latin America, as well as the transformation of indigenous cosmologies once the colonial period began. It's a fascinating story because it recreates the curse of not being able to love brings a state of solitude that transcends generations. Even so, everything is not so sad, because the book teaches us that the fact of sharing a tragic destiny, only marks the beginning and the end of our histories, then what is in between, is a space where exists the possibility of enjoying life.
